New teen drinking law: your questions answered!

On 1 November 2011, a new law will be introduced in Victoria. This law will make it an offence under the Liquor Control Reform Act 1998 to supply alcohol to anyone under the age of 18 years in a private residence without parental consent.  People breaking this law could face a fine of more than $7,000.

A joint information and education campaign run by the Victorian Government, VicHealth and the Australian Drug Foundation was launched on 5 October 2011.

The campaign includes the Teen drinking law website. Two features of the website are  "Ask a question" and an online discussion forum, which both encourage sharing of ideas and information.

Ask a question
This online question and answer service is a space where people can anonymously ask questions about the new law, why it was introduced, the effects of alcohol on young people, and other related issues.

The questions will be answered by a professional, and both the questions and answers will be published online so that everyone can learn from them.

Online discussion forum
The online discussion forum provides a space for parents, carers, health professionals and others to share and discuss strategies for managing young people and alcohol, safe partying,  reducing alcohol-related harm and other related issues.
